Today, children are introduced to technology at an early age, they use cell phones and digital cameras, computers, chat with their friends on social networking sites, shop online, and watch videos on YouTube. Children are natural visual learners and the web is particularly suited towards visual media. Integrating new media into the curriculum seizes the opportunity to make a connection between the classroom and student's lives. Instead of only consuming media, students could learn to use digital technology as a writing tool to author their own content.
The Media Workshop is designed to acquaint teachers with digital media that they can utilize in the classroom to explore new approaches to teaching and learning. This workshop will cover: blogs, wikis, simple website construction, information mapping, and online projects utilizing primary sources. Participants will come away with new methods for deconstructing images and with a number of different visual storytelling exercises to implement in their classes.
